WHO: ARTWORKS’ ARTIST OF THE MONTH FOR JULY CYNTHIA HOBGOOD

WHAT: JEWELRY MAKING DEMO by Cynthia Hobgood

WHEN: Demonstration Saturdays, July 13th & 20th, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Light refreshments

We all learned bead stringing in kindergarten using macaroni and yarn. At about the same time I discovered rocks. Just sitting in the dirt searching for the “pretty ones” no driveway or gravel pile was safe from pilfer-age.

Still searching for the prettiest rocks, today I travel the world via trade shows and the internet searching for quality gemstones, semi-precious gemstones, pearls, crystal, artisan glass and metals. At the very heart of beautiful jewelry are these beautiful gifts from nature.

Once selected, characteristics of the heart or focal piece guide the design. Unique designs come from new pairings and combinations in colors, proportion, texture, balance, and scale. The design’s practical considera-tions are wearability, construction and camouflage.

But my first necklace some 40 years ago wasn’t a circle at all. I had not yet learned to close the circle with a clasp. I started stringing and hand knotting pearls with no real objective except keeping my hands busy. Sixteen feet later I had a new hobby and an open- ended lariat. I still love it!

Moving from hobby to business is the result of being “discovered” by Artworks owner Talis Jayme. The quirky little gallery and its very talented artists always have something there to make you smile. Because of Talis my pretty rocks, pearls and I are happily at home.

ARTIST: Wanda Hubbard

ARTIST: Wanda Hubbard

Wanda Hubbard, was born in Birmingham Alabama and is a self-taught artist. She enjoys painting using vivid colors, studying the techniques used by other artists and experimenting with varying techniques/styles.

She began painting in the late 70's with watercolors; botanical themes being her favorite. As an inexperienced painter she was drawn towards watercolors because painting with watercolors is relaxing and forgiving. In the early 90's she began working with oils.

Wanda's work, spanning over forty years, has included various mediums (watercolor, acrylic, oil, ink and resin) but one thing has stayed the same. From the first watercolor to her work today with alcohol inks, her love of brilliant colors continues.
